A Short History Of Arial Maps

Although the history of maps go back a long way, ariel maps are of much more recent origin. Aerial view maps came into existence only after the skills of photography and flying were mastered. The earliest aerial photo maps were taken in the mid nineteenth century from hot-air balloons in France by Nader. He photographed a French village in which the houses were visible. This was followed by another photograph of Paris taken in 1868. These first aerial image maps do not exist any longer but an aerial view of Boston taken by James Wallace Black taken in 1860 still exist today.

By early twentieth century, people started realizing fully the scope of taking photographs in mid air. A photographer named George Lawrence took aerial view maps of San Francisco after an earthquake in 1906, in which he used kites fitted with cameras. This displayed the usefulness of aerial photographs used as a map to show the destruction that took place in the area. The first aerial photograph taken from an airplane was carried out by Wilber Wright in 1909.

Today, thousands of images are easily accessible from microsoft aerial maps, in addition to the ever expanding knowledge base derived from aerial maps.
